Trump calls on Alabama Legislature to protect IVF: âFind an immediate solutionâ
Former President Donald Trump Friday said he supports “the availability of fertility treatments like IVF in every State in America,” his strongest statement in response to the Alabama Supreme Court’s ruling on frozen embryos.
The leading Republican running to retake the White House, Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to show his support, urging Alabama lawmakers to preserve in vitro fertilization.
In a post, he said:
“Under my leadership, the Republican Party will always support the creation of strong, thriving, healthy American families. We want to make it easier for mothers and fathers to have babies, not harder! That includes supporting the availability of fertility treatments like IVF in every State in America. Like the OVERWHELMING MAJORITY of Americans, including the VAST MAJORITY of Republicans, Conservatives, Christians, and Pro-Life Americans, I strongly support the availability of IVF for couples who are trying to have a precious baby.
“Today, I am calling on the Alabama Legislature to act quickly to find an immediate solution to preserve the availability of IVF in Alabama. The Republican Party should always be on the side of the Miracle of Life – and the side of Mothers, Fathers, and their Beautiful Babies. IVF is an important part of that, and our Great Republican Party will always be with you, in your quest, for the ULTIMATE JOY IN LIFE!”
Republicans and Democrats in the Alabama Legislature have put forward bills in the past day that would define any fertilized human egg or human embryo outside of a uterus as “not considered an unborn child or human being for any purpose under state law.”
The move comes after the Alabama Supreme Court last week ruled that embryos had the same legal status as children. The ruling has already had widespread repercussions for healthcare providers and families seeking treatment.
On Wednesday, the University of Alabama at Birmingham health system paused in vitro fertilization procedures. Multiple others offering IVF services in Homewood, Huntsville and Mobile on Thursday paused the procedure as well.
